Summit Ledger: Paired Learning Competition

Your students take over a mountain expedition after the lead guide is injured. They start at Basecamp at 3,100 metres with 760 supply units and six days to reach a high camp at 5,000 metres. Every day they compute altitude, temperature and supplies, and every evening they choose between a fast expensive route and a slow cheap one. Adding and subtracting negative numbers is not the exercise here. It is the thing that decides whether they make it.


Every pair in the room climbs the same mountain with the same weather, the same routes and the same prices. What differs is the numbers they write down and the decisions they make with them.


How the pairing actually works


Day 1: together. Both students share one collaborative worksheet and work all nine numbers side by side. Whatever one types appears on the other's screen immediately. One drives, one checks, and they swap halfway down the sheet.


Then they split. In a locked role-assignment activity the pair chooses who becomes the Quartermaster, owning temperature, the cold-night rule and supplies, and who becomes the Navigator, owning altitude, distance climbed and distance remaining. Roles hold for the rest of the expedition.


Days 2 to 5: apart, then together. Each day is one master worksheet with two child worksheets hanging off it. Each partner opens their own ledger, computes four numbers, and sends them back to the shared evening meeting screen. The route options stay locked until both ledgers are in, because the Navigator knows how high each route goes and the Quartermaster knows whether the team can afford it. Neither half answers the question alone. Both partners sign off before the day closes.


Day 6: the summit push. The pair returns to one joint sheet, computes both possible routes in full, commits to one with a shared sign-off, and then watches the mountain play out the plan they signed.


How it fits your timetable

The lab runs across three class periods, and each one ends at a natural stopping point rather than mid-activity.

  • Period one covers the reading, the individual practice worksheet, team formation and the whole of Day 1, which the pair works together.
  • Period two splits the ledger, runs Days 2, 3 and 4, and includes the mid-expedition supply drop where the pair decides what they can afford to carry.
  • Period three runs the last ordinary day, the summit plan, the push, the verdict and your leaderboard reveal.


Because progress is stored per team, a pair can pick up exactly where it stopped, and the drag-and-drop team tools let you cover an absence without unpicking anyone's work.


Team management is built in


You do not set up teams, track who did what, or reconcile scores. The platform forms the pairs, lets students propose a team name for your approval, gives you drag-and-drop rebalancing when a student is absent, shows live progress for every pair, monitors collaboration chat, queues the written reflection for grading, and pushes scores to Google Classroom. Work is tracked at task level rather than per student, so nobody is penalised for who pressed submit. Ideal team size is two; three is supported.


What students do

  • Compute signed-number chains for altitude, temperature and supplies across six virtual days
  • Decide whether each night falls below the cold threshold, and what that costs
  • Project both routes forward before committing, then argue the decision out with a partner
  • Price six pieces of equipment at a mid-expedition supply drop and choose what they can afford to carry
  • Compute both summit routes in the final math gate and commit to one with a joint sign-off
  • Write a reflection on how the partnership worked, which arrives in your evaluation queue


What makes it a competition

Score is altitude, plus a bonus for reaching the high camp while still holding enough supplies to walk back down, plus a large weighting for getting calculations right on the first attempt. Supplies themselves earn nothing, so hoarding does not win. Climbing recklessly does not either: a team that runs out stops walking and forfeits every remaining day. You reveal the leaderboard at the end, with prizes for Class Champions, Sharpest Team and Best Single Day, so a careful pair that finished lower still has a route to the podium.
