Tent Fabric Review: Surface Area from Nets (Grade 6, 6.G.A.4)


Turn surface area practice into a real design decision. In this interactive middle school geometry activity, students step into the role of a product designer at an outdoor gear company that is putting one two-person tent into production. Four tent styles are on the table, an A-frame, a cabin, a pyramid, and a lean-to, and every one of them sits on the same square floor. The catch: they are different shapes, so they use very different amounts of fabric. Students have to figure out which one costs the least to make.


What students do


Each tent is shown as a flat net, the way the fabric is actually cut before it is sewn. Students find the area of every panel, working with both rectangles and triangles, then add the faces to get the total surface area of each tent. From there they convert surface area into fabric cost and scale it up to a full production run, moving from geometry into a genuine purchasing decision. A built-in summary table ranks all four tents so the big idea lands on its own: same floor, very different surface area.

Learning Objective

Students apply standard 6.G.A.4 by representing four tent shapes as flat nets and using those nets to find surface area. They calculate the area of each face, built from rectangles and triangles, and sum them for each figure. Because all four tents share an identical floor but differ in shape, students discover the core idea of the standard: surface area is not determined by the base, and two shapes covering the same ground can need very different amounts of material. Students then turn their totals into fabric cost and a production run, and finish by reasoning about which tent to recommend.
